Another Year Older…Celebrating with two birthday cakes!

My youngest son turned 7 on Tuesday. I can’t quite believe how fast my boys are growing up..where do the years go? I look at their baby pictures and it dawns on me just how quickly those baby days zoomed by..I’m sure I can’t be the only mother who feels the same.

We celebrated with not one but two birthday cakes. My son loves anything to do with chocolate cake and marshmallows, so when I saw this delicious looking cake on Jo’s blue aga I knew straight away my boy would absolutely love it. He actually saw me looking at the picture of the cake on my laptop and professed this was his dream cake. So how could I not make it after that statement!! By the way, if you don’t already know this you can watch Jo on the BBC Great British Bake Off on BBC2. I’m addicted to the programme!

Anyway back to the birthday cake! I used Mary Berry’s “very best chocolate cake” recipe. It was lovely and moist and I would certainly make it again. Then comes the really fun part! I iced the cake with chocolate buttercream and pilled it high with maltesers, marshmallows, magic stars and drizzled with melted white chocolate. The Birthday boy was delighted! Thanks to Jo for the inspiration 🙂

I promised my son two cakes – one on his actual Birthday and one for his party – not much of a hardship when you love to bake! He requested a puffle cake. Puffles are cute fuzzy little characters from Club Penguin, an online game/community that seems very popular with kids at the moment.

I made a vanilla sponge cake sandwiched together with jam and buttercream. Then I iced the cake and got to work on the little puffles. Now sugarcraft is a new thing for me and I found it quite fiddly but I really enjoyed making the puffles. I’m hoping to have another go using sugarpaste models in the very near future, practice makes perfect (hopefully!)
