Jo Wheatley – A Passion for Baking review

Now I wasn’t planning on writing another book review so soon after my last but I’ve been looking forward to this book for a loooong time!

I loved Jo on The Great British Bake off.  She was so lovely and down to earth.  Her confidence seemed to grow each week and she produced some really stunning baking.  When she was announced the winner I was over the moon for her.  I grew so obsessed by the show that no-one in the house was allowed to talk while it was on!

So now Jo’s book is finally available and let me tell you, it was worth the wait.  I’ve fallen in love with it.  It’s beautifully written with tons of gorgeous pictures and I want to bake every single recipe.  It is divided in chapters including breakfast, brunch, baking with children, biscuits and cookies to mention a few.  I particularly like the family baking chapter.  I can already see that many of these recipes will definitely become family favourites.

This week I’ve made the peanut butter cookies twice.  I think I’ve found my new favourite cookie recipe.  They are so yummy!

I added peanut M&M’s to this batch…it worked very well.  I can also confirm they are gorgeous with white chocolate chips too!

As soon as I opened the book this recipe jumped out at me..Chocolate, Cardamom and Strawberry swiss roll.  This is absolutely divine.  My boys felt the same and my youngest piped up “Can you make this for my birthday in August, please?”   I didn’t even get a chance to take a picture before it was cut up and devoured so apologies for the dodgy picture below.  My finished swiss roll looked nowhere near as neat as Jo’s, so I might have to practice this one! Any excuse to make it again…;-)

Last but not least I made the Raspberry Torte.  Jo says she’s been baking this Torte for twenty-five years now and it’s a no-fail.  The recipe is from Jo’s friend Linda.  I can see why Jo loves this recipe, it’s so quick and easy, really pretty to look at and delicious and moist.

I don’t think this book is ever going to leave my kitchen.  This book is selling extremely well and no wonder.  I’m so happy for Jo because she really is such a genuinely lovely person who deserves every success.  Go get it in Sainsbury’s now!

p.s I was not asked to review this book.  I am not receiving anything for doing so.  I just love it so much I wanted to tell everyone!

  1. It’s a must in any home baker’s repertoire Nic, absolutely love this book. Poor Joost had a big flop with the ginger biscuits I was so gutted but am glad to see you’ve done at least two recipes I haven’t tried so far which worked brilliantly as your photos show! X

  3. I love the look of the Raspberry Torte! And the Swiss Roll looks delicious! I love anything with fresh strawberries and this sounds like a nice change to having a jam filling. I will have to keep an eye out for her book.
