Nutella swirled chocolate chunk banana muffins


Mmmmmmm, Nutella. How I love thee. There can’t be a sweet baked good in the world that couldn’t be improved with the addition of Nutella, don’t you think? I’ll let you in on a secret..recently I made little Nutella brioche twists…and oh my good God. They were out of this world yummy. They disappeared so fast I didn’t even get a chance to photograph them. I will be making them again soon – if I have an army to feed. They are way too dangerous to have hanging around the house.

Luckily for my hips, my boys are huge banana muffin fans so I can’t see these hanging around for very long either. Sometimes I make these in my mini muffin tins and freeze a few (pop them in the microwave on the defrost setting for a minute or so and they’ll be perfect.)


These muffins are based on Nigella Lawson’s banana butterscotch muffin recipe from “Nigella Express.”

Nutella swirled chocolate chunk banana muffins
Makes 12 large or 24 mini muffins

250g plain flour
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp bicarbonate of soda
100g sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla extract
125ml vegetable oil
3 bananas, mashed
100g chocolate chunks/chips
75g Nutella – if your Nutella is quite stiff you may need to soften it slightly – I gently warmed it up in a saucepan. It made it much easier to swirl into the batter.

Preheat the oven to 200C. Line a muffin tin with muffin cases. 

Place the flour, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda and sugar in a mixing bowl and stir to combine.


Measure out the oil in a jug, add the vanilla eggs and crack in the eggs. Stir together.


Pour this oily mixture into the dry ingredients and very lightly stir to mix. Add the bananas and the chocolate chips. Don’t beat –  just lightly stir! Over mixing wil give you tough muffins. When all the ingredients are just combined, stop.

Spoon the mixture into your muffin cases. Place a blob (for want of a better word!) of Nutella on top of the batter. Using a table knife, lightly swirl through the mixture until you have a marbled effect.


Bake for 20 minutes or until well risen and the muffins spring back when lightly pressed. Place on a wire rack to cool slightly before serving to your lucky family and friends!
