Classic Smoked Mackerel Pâté makes a perfect easy starter, quick lunch or supper. It’s made with Greek yoghurt, lemon and a few dashes of Tabasco sauce for a little kick.

Smoked Mackerel Pâté makes a wonderful light meal, or an easy starter that you can prepare in advance. I like to serve it with brown bread or Melba Toast.
I make this smoked fish Pâté often because my son loves it on toast – he might be 20 years old, but I still like to try and make sure he eats something healthy!
why you’ll love this smoked mackerel Pâté recipe
- Quick & Easy: It takes 5 minutes to prepare and one bowl – no cooking required.
- Good For You: Smoked Mackerel is rich in healthy fats and protein.
- Light and Creamy: Greek yoghurt gives a lighter result than the more traditional cream cheese.
- Just 4 Ingredients – Smoked Mackerel Fillets, Greek Yoghurt, Tabasco sauce and Lemon. Oh, and salt and freshly ground black pepper – so strictly speaking, 6 ingredients!!

how to make it
1. Flake the smoked mackerel: Remove the skin from the fillets. Check for any stray bones. Use your fingers or a fork to shred the fish into a mixing bowl. I like to leave a few slightly larger flakes for a bit of texture, but you can mash it finer if you prefer.
2. Mix everything together: Add the Greek yoghurt, lemon zest and juice and a few dashes of Tabasco. Mix gently with a large spoon until well combined. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Taste and add more lemon, Tabasco or more salt and pepper to your liking.
3. Optional Extra: Sprinkle the pate with fresh chives before serving.

serving suggestions for smoked fish Pâté
Serve the Pâté chilled with crusty bread, oatcakes, crackers or spread or warm toasted granary bread. It’s also delicious with sliced cucumber or a green salad.
For an easy, delicious and healthy lunch for two, I like to serve Pâté with crackers, sliced peppers, cherry tomatoes and carrot and celery sticks.

storing leftovers
- In the fridge – homemade fish Pâté will keep in the refrigerator for up to three days. Store any leftovers in an airtight container. If it looks watery, give it a good stir before serving.
can fish Pâté be frozen?
I’m afraid this recipe is not suitable for freezing – it turns a funny texture once defrosted. I tried it once – never again!

recipe notes
⭐For a smoother Pâté, blend it briefly in a food processor. Don’t overdo it, though – it’s much nicer with a little bit of texture. ⭐If you don’t have any Tabasco, try adding 1/2 teaspoon of horseradish sauce for a fiery kick. ⭐ Please make sure you use full fat Greek yoghurt for this recipe – if you’re making the pate in advance, the lower fat yoghurt will give a watery result.
