This Candy Cane Hot Chocolate Mix would make a brilliant homemade Christmas gift for a mint chocolate fan! It takes minutes to make and tastes utterly delicious.
Peppermint hot chocolate is one of my favourite hot drinks at Christmastime.
Coffee will always be my number one choice (hello, pumpkin spice latte) and I’ll never turn down a glass (or two) of homemade mulled wine in December. But there is just something about a cup of rich, dark hot chocolate that makes me want to get cosy and snuggle beside a roaring fire.
Treating yourself to the occasional hot drink when you’re out and about is nice, but it can get rather expensive. Why not save yourself a few pounds and make this homemade hot chocolate mix instead?
This peppermint Hot Chocolate Mix is so festive. It takes mere minutes to make and keeps for months, although I strongly suspect it won’t last anywhere near that long!
It would make such a lovely homemade Christmas gift for a mint chocolate fan – maybe even with a bottle of Creme De Menthe for an extra special treat!

How to make homemade hot chocolate mix
Step 1. Place your peppermint candy canes in a plastic zip lock bag.
Step 2. Using a rolling pin or similar heavy implement, bash them to smithereens.
Step 3. Place them in a large jar (or two small jars) with the cocoa powder, icing sugar, cornflour, salt and finely chopped chocolate.
Step 4. Place a lid on the jar and shake it like a Polaroid picture until the mixture is evenly dispersed.
That’s all you have to do. Your hot chocolate mix is ready!

serving candy cane hot chocolate
I like to serve this hot chocolate in tall heatproof glasses or mugs, with whipped cream, grated chocolate and a candy cane on the side. Little and big kids will love it!
If you love mint chocolate, you might also consider making my peppermint chocolate cookies with crushed candy canes or my candy cane cupcakes.
faqs
I’ve used all kinds of different cocoa powders, from supermarket brands to the more “Luxury” Callebaut and Cocao Barry. It’s best to stick with proper cocoa and not “drinking chocolate” as this has extra sugars/sweeteners and milk powder.
Homemade hot chocolate mix will keep in an airtight jar for several months. Having said that, it’s highly unlikely that it will hang around for that long!
